Proteus

UNEP-WCMC's Proteus Partnership

Proteus is a cross-sector collaboration of multinational businesses in high-priority sectors to advance best practice approaches to biodiversity management, address common challenges, and harness common opportunities.

Proteus was initiated in 2003 as a unique collaboration to provide companies with the biodiversity information needed for better informed decisions, and to support the development, improvement and dissemination of global biodiversity data and information. From five founding member companies in 2003, Proteus has since helped over 25 companies with the implementation of their biodiversity strategies and invested over £17 million in conservation data and approaches.

Proteus was created in response to a need for access to better data to improve decision-making. Over time, the scope of the partnership has grown beyond data-provision to support decision-making and place those decisions in the context of global momentum to address the biodiversity crisis. The imperative to address biodiversity, climate and societal goals in cohesion shapes the future of work to be carried out through Proteus.

Throughout the next five years, we are expanding the membership of Proteus to companies from priority sectors and value chains with key interfaces with biodiversity across their business activities. These include agriculture, food and beverage, forestry, mining, infrastructure, renewable energy and utilities, manufacturing, automotive and pharmaceuticals. This cross-sectoral approach enables shared learning and joined-up action across business operations, value chains and landscapes. We are addressing shared knowledge gaps to advance the evidence for robust action and supporting businesses as they apply this within their contexts.
